Our Approach
 
Abraaj Capital has been a pioneer in shaping the regional private equity landscape over the past decade and has been at the forefront of the private equity industry across the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and South Asia. We have consistently maintained our regional leadership position by being receptive to the needs of our investors and partner companies and focusing relentlessly on the quality and resources of our firm. Building on our expertise of successfully executing transactions in the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and South Asia, we have now expanded our geographic focus to include the high growth markets of South East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.   
 
Since inception, Abraaj Capital has built up one of the largest and most experienced multi-disciplinary in-house teams operating across the region, with proven investment and transactional execution expertise, direct operational experience, and deep research and analytical resources.
 
Growth Oriented Sectors
We focus primarily on defensive yet growth oriented sectors such as education, food, healthcare, power and water, transportation and logistics, and oil and gas services across the region. Within these sectors, we invest in companies that are market leaders with sustainable competitive advantages and an entrepreneurial management team.
 
Active Ownership Model
We consider an active portfolio management process as amongst the most critical aspects of our investment approach. We work closely with the management teams of our partner companies and are actively involved in the strategic direction of the business. Our aim is to build long-term value in each of our partner companies and we do so by providing them with access to capital, talent, best in class business practices, environmental, social and governance frameworks and regional networks. By employing a strategic approach to institutionalizing and unlocking value, we are assisting each of the companies to reach the next stage of their corporate development.
 
Growth Markets
In a region where private equity is still at an early stage, we had the foresight to be the first mover in this space over 15 years ago. While our global peers saw the Middle East as a source of capital which they could invest in other geographies, we chose to invest in the region and have maintained this strong first mover advantage which has given us the scale, experience and depth of management that is unparalleled in the region. This expertise has allowed us to expand beyond our initial focus region of the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and South Asia into other high growth economies of South East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. With an operating presence in 12 countries in the Middle East, Africa, Turkey and Asia, we actively leverage our regional networks to source and optimize the best opportunities for our investors.
 
Stakeholder Engagement
Since inception, we have viewed our role as going beyond that of a leading private equity firm providing investors and shareholders with superior risk adjusted returns. Our starting point was to consider financial value creation as the hub of a nexus driven by truly sustainable, regionally-rooted, economic value creation – in other words, where shareholder returns are primary, but where the ability to create systemic and sustainable change in the economic landscape of our operating markets is as critical a benchmark of success as pure financial returns. The Abraaj Strategic Stakeholder Engagement Track (ASSET) which encapsulates this belief sits at the heart of our firm and implements a parallel programming approach that ensures our employees and partner companies become active community citizens and engage with our stakeholders in implementing the firm's stakeholder vision.
